In our article about Socie Chat, we took an in-depth look at the benefits of direct communication within your community. Now that you know what one-on-one chat can do for your members, it’s time to focus on the practical side: how exactly do you set up the chat?
Take Control of Your Communication: Socie Chat Settings Explained
As an administrator on Socie, you decide how communication flows within your community. Users also have their own options for managing their privacy. Below is an overview of all the available settings in Socie Chat.
Community Chat Settings (for community administrators)
As an administrator, you determine the structure of communication within your community. You have full control over who can connect with whom using the following options:
- Turn chat on or off: You can enable or disable the chat feature entirely for the entire community.
- Set Chat Scope: Here, you determine how members can reach each other. Choose one of the following scenarios:
- Everyone: All members of the community can chat with each other.
- Only with community administrators: Members can only chat with the administrators.
- Only with group members: Members can only chat with people who are in the same group (note: this excludes the community administrator, unless they are also in that group).
- Restrict chat with rules: Want to decide for yourself who can chat with whom? Set specific rules for roles and groups. You can choose based on the source (members, groups, or admins) and with whom (group, group members, admins, or all members).
Personal Chat Settings (for members)
At the profile level, users can manage their own privacy and communication preferences. Several new chat-related settings have also been added to your profile.
- Automatically Accept Chat Requests: Members can choose whether they want to automatically accept incoming chat requests or approve them manually. The default setting is: Do not accept automatically.
- Blocked Members: You can block members from the profile overview. Once a member is blocked, the following restrictions apply to that person:
- They cannot send you messages.
- They cannot tag you.
- They cannot view your profile.
Chat Settings (for Members)
Yes, you have full control over your own chat experience:
- Mute a chat: When you mute a chat, you’ll no longer receive notifications about new messages in that conversation.
- Archive a chat: This moves the chat to your archived chats, causing it to disappear from your active list.
- Reporting chat content: You can “report content” within a chat. If, for example, there is inappropriate content, you can easily send a report to the community administrators as a member.
